After four years of working with street children in Lobito, the time has come for Médecins du Monde to hand-over the work. We have identified the Angolan organisation OMUNGA

Strengthening the health system- Huila

Since October 2008,Médecins du Monde has been working in Huila province to strengthen the health system, particularly by dealing with mother and child healthcare and care for HIV/AIDS.

Since the end of the war in 2002, Angola has been rebuilding itself, with help from its oil revenues. However, the situation remains very insecure for the most disadvantaged and the gap between the rich and the poor is growing. Although the budget allocated to health is increasing, the majority of the population is still excluded from healthcare. The most vulnerable are the poor urban populations, particularly street children, as well as the rural populations.

SUPPORTING CARE FOR STREET CHILDREN.

Lobito, Benguela province - Long term

ACTIVITIES

Between 2005 and 2008, MdM worked in Angola to improve the living conditions of street children in Lobito, in partnership with civil society and the government, by improving access to healthcare and to hygienic conditions, helping with socio-economic reintegration and strengthening the child protection system.
In view of the results obtained, and to ensure that the activities undertaken will be sustainable, MdM decided that the project was ready for handover to the Angolan organisation OMUNGA in 2009. OMUNGA works on children’s rights and is very involved in advocacy activities. Until March 2010, OMUNGA received financial and technical support from MdM to help strengthen its capacity so that the handover could take place in the best possible conditions.

RESULTS

Since 2009, 150 children and adolescents living on the streets have been supported in a health centre, around 20 have received training.
